For most people considering any kind of reconstructive surgery, the word plastic surgeon springs to mind. However, when it comes to the delicate skin area around the eye, you would need to retain the services of a specialist, an ophthalmic surgeon. Oculoplastic surgery or ophthalmic plastic surgery is a specific field involving specialised plastic and reconstructive surgery of the eyelids, tear duct system and eye socket.

"For anyone considering having surgery to their eyelids, oculoplastic surgeons offer an additional and welcome insurance policy," says Vickie Lee, a consultant ophthalmic and oculoplastic surgeon. "The areas around the eyes are the first to show signs of ageing. A properly performed blepharoplasty should rejuvenate your face and make it look more alert. However, the eyelids also play an essentially protective role for the delicate structures of the eye."

Oculoplastic surgery embraces a number of procedures to correct hooded or baggy eyelids and improve the aesthetic appearance of the eyelids and surrounding area of the face. Blepharoplasty is the most common procedure. Surgery involves removing and reconturing excess tissue, skin, muscle and sometimes fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids. It can be done in conjunction with other treatments such as a brow lift and Botox. "My priority is to avoid complications, large or small, which may affect vision," says Ms Lee. "I believe oculoplastic surgery sets the correct balance between a great aesthetic outcome and ensuring that nothing comes between you and your sight."




Unlike the traditional cosmetic or aesthetic surgeon, the ocuplastic surgeon is trained to manage complications, which involve the eye itself. It's best to check whether your consultant has undergone accredited oculoplastic training and regularly performs a substantial volume of ophthalmic plastic surgery.
